Blue Heron Lake

Blue Heron Lake is a small man-made pond in Sparta Township, Sussex County. It is in the Weldon Brook Wildlife Management Area. There is considerable road noise from the nearby highway. But the lake is pretty, and wonderfully wild. Most of the lake is shallow, so it is often weed-covered by mid-summer. The following pictures were taken in May.

To access Blue Heron Lake, park at the end of Blue Heron Road, then walk through the woods for approximately ten minutes. Once you see the pond, take the trail to the right. It leads around to the dam, which is the best launch site.
