Tilcon Lake

Tilcon Lake (88 acres) is in Mount Olive Township, Morris County. It is Allamuchy Mountain State Park. The lake was formed in August 2000, when the nearby Musconetcong River flooded into the abandoned Tilcon Quarry. The lake has no inlet, nor outlet. It is considered to be one of the clearest lakes in New Jersey. To access, one has to park on Kinney road, then walk about 100 yards to the shore.

Tilcon Lake has one big negative: There is a lot of road noise, as Interstate 80 is just one hundred yards to the north. One cannot see the highway, but one will hear it. Other than that, the lake is magical. The water is crystal clear, the shoreline is nice, and the nearby wooded hills are charming. There is a lot of interesting vegetation under the surface. The following photos do not do the underwater view justice on account of the glare.
