Pompton Lake
Pompton Lake (204 acres) is in Pompton Lakes, Passaic County. There are two public launch sites on the lake, each of which is documented separately below. Most of the waterfront is private property. The lake has green murky water.
Lakeside Park
Lakeside Park in Pompton Lakes (town) is on the lower section of the lake, which mostly consists of a large pond. We paddled over to the dam, then back.
Potash Lake Recreation Area
The Potash Lake Recreation Area and boat launch is in Oakland, Bergen County. Despite the different name, the water is part of Pompton Lake. It was created during the early 2000s by the US Army Corps of Engineers to mitigate flooding on the Ramapo River. This section of the lake is narrow and wild. It is arguably prettier than the lower section. But in some areas, there is a lot of road noise from nearby Interstate 287.
Ramapo River Entrance
The Ramapo River flows into Pompton Lake near the north end. It doesn’t enter as a river, but rather as a small and very pretty channel that is worth exploring. Unlike on the lake, the water is crystal clear.
