Walpack Ridge Trail Pond
The Walpack Ridge Trail in Walpack Township, Sussex County, circumnavigates a small unnamed beaver pond that is in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The pond is wonderfully wild and very pretty.
Getting There
There are several routes in to the pond. Arguably, the most interesting is from the Delaware River side:
Drive along the (very rough) Old Mine Road and park at the Van Campen Inn.
Walk north along Old Mine Road for 100 yards, until one sees the Military Road trailhead.
Take the Military Road Trail up the hill. Halfway up, visit the Slave/Free Colored Cemetery.
At the top of the hill, take the Walkpack Ridge Trail northwards along the ridge.
After about 500 yards, the trail will drop down towards the pond.
Take a short overgrown trail down to the pond.
The area is rich with history: The Old Mine Road was built by the Dutch in the 1650s. The Van Campen Inn and the Military Road were built in the 1750s - during the French & Indian War. The area saw much activity during the American Revolution.
