Whippany River

The Whippany River is a twenty mile long tributary of the Passaic River. Much of the river is not accessible, or is highly urbanized. The section in Morris Township (upriver from Speedwell Lake) is both easily accessible and very beautiful. But it is not navigable - on account of the numerous downed trees obstructing the waterway.

We started at Lake Valley Road, and tried to paddle upriver for approximately one mile to Sussex Avenue. The current was not strong, and the water was sufficiently deep in most places to enable easy paddling. But the dead trees obstructing were too numerous and too difficult. We gave up approximately half-way, just before Inamere Road.
